Do I Have a Wet Heart?
Have you ever sat next to a river and watched the water work its way past you? Its movement wasn’t really work. It was effortless; going in the direction of the current, weaving in and around rocks, large boulders and trees. In the Bible, the Holy Spirit is compared to a river. Jesus said “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of water” John 7:38. The Holy Spirit is that river of water. It brings new life to our dry hearts.
In nature, flowing water always takes the path of least resistance, bending to go around a mountain. When we stand our ground and refuse to be molded, the Holy Spirit can no longer work. It must ‘bend’ and go around that area. We can block Him with our unwillingness to change. The Jews were challenged by Steven in Acts 7 as being hardhearted. Steven said: “Ye do always resist the Holy Ghost.” Let us take that verse to heart. Am I like those who were listening to Steven? Do I resist God? The crowd was so resistant, they stoned Steven instead of accepting the truth about Jesus Christ.
Yet when resistance crumbles, the flowing water will cut a new course! The river that you sat by over time has worn a path for itself. The areas along the bank have weakened, and now water passes over where an outcropping of dirt once was. Will you allow God cut new paths in your heart? Break down the hard areas and let Him ‘wear you out’? Or are you holding it all together, unwilling to bend, to break? What won’t I change for God? What am I holding on to?
Give in to the Holy Spirit. Become vulnerable like sand so the Holy Spirit can rush through with living water to revive and refresh every area. I want a heart that is wet, from the River of water!
