Today In Photos: Living Bridge!
In Cherrapunji, India, the locals use the roots of the Ficus elastica tree to build bridges across streams. They actually grow them to become bridges. They take about 10 to 15 years to become functional, and because they are living, the bridges only grow stronger the longer they are around. Some of the bridges that the locals use on a daily basis are over 500 years old. Some are even strong enough to support the weight of 50 people at once. The picture above is known as the “Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge”, and is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world. This is both a credit to creation and the ingenuity of man.
