10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Thanksgiving

1965730262_9238154009I don’t know if you heard this or not, but today, and every fourth Thursday in the month of November in the US of A, we observe a little holiday called, Thanksgiving Day. It’s a time where we reflect on some of the blessing we have and why we are thankful for them. It’s a time of family, friends, and fellowship. It’s also a time for overeating, football, and extreme napping. I like to research holidays and find out interesting information on the history and traditions of holidays. (Yes, I am that cool) I also like lists of ten. So here’s the Thanksgiving Day edition of the 10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know. Happy Thanksgiving Day everyone!

1. The earliest Thanksgiving was not celebrated by the Pilgrims, but rather the Spanish in Florida on September 8, 1565. Ole!
2. In Grenada, they also celebrate Thanksgiving Day on October 25th. However it has nothing to do with our Thanksgiving despite having the same name and similar date.
3. Felix the Cat was the first giant balloon to be shown in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade back in 1927. He was later moved to Times Square where a giant clock face was installed on his belly, and his tail and eyes were geared to move with the second hand. (I’m totally kidding about the second part…at least I think so. I couldn’t find anything that said that they DIDN’T do that, so…)
4. Over 44 million watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade on TV every year.
5. And by “watching” I think they mean, “it’s on, but no one’s really paying attention.”
6. In Buffalo, New York, the Saturday after Thanksgiving is the day of the World’s Largest Disco. True story.
7. Thanksgiving is the one day in the year where the Detroit Lions are nationally acknowledged as a football team.
8. Black Friday is NOT the busiest day of shopping (revenue-wise) in the year. It is actually the 4th or 5th busiest. Busiest day of the shopping year is actually the Saturday before Christmas. Procrastinators!
9. On Black Friday, there will be exactly two parking spots available before you get there. All of which will be taken as you watch in helpless disbelief.
10. I do not like pumpkin pie. Sorry. I just don’t.

Great list! I laughed at the parade comment because that’s exactly what we did yesterday. It’s been years since we even turned it on, but it was so boring to sit there and watch lip-synced performances and balloons roll by with “witty” banter from the hosts. Oh well, traditions are traditions I guess…

Also, don’t like pumpkin pie? Ya, you better be sorry. :)

haha! Yep, that's what's on TV every year. My mom swears she pays attention, but I never see her in front of the TV on Thanksgiving (She's usually stuck in the kitchen making an awesome meal). My favorite banter from the hosts is when there's a bear related float. Their comments become un-bear-able! Ha! :P

It seems Brett that you are a walking wikipedia.
You have a lot of information about everything.
Good stuff here that I had no clue about.

People say that I would be their phone-a-friend if they were ever on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. I charge a 5% fee if anyone else is interested. lol

Amusing list, Brett.:) I, too, "watched" the parade.
And one fateful BF morning, Brian and I were acutally the first ones in the parking lot of Hh Gregg. Lots of parking.:)
