A few simple (very simple) tips on staying physically fit

1. Avoid a close friendship with junk food. Simple as pie…..wait, did I just say pie? Grabbing a piece of graduation cake here and a treat from the ice cream truck there does add up the calories. Did you know that the small Chocolate Extreme Blizzard from DQ contains a whopping 660 calories!! I’m not the dessert Nazi either, believe me. I’ve had my share of yummy treats! But I try to balance the calories coming in with the calories going out. If you eat that blizzard, maybe get in an hour of running. A 140 lb woman can burn 672 calories at a 6mph pace. And remember every 3500 calories equals a pound of body fat.

2. Along with avoiding junk food, try to add healthy food to your daily diet. Load the strawberries onto your cereal in the morning. Eat a banana for a snack instead of those potato chips. Eat a salad with your dinner. And drink lots of water. The recommended daily drinking amount is not 8 glasses a day; it’s actually half of your body weight in ounces of water. Water has 0 cals, and it’s way healthier than all those sugary sodas.

The True Value of YOU

If you were asked to describe yourself in a few words, what you would say? Maybe that you are the life of the party, the computer geek, or the frazzled mother? It all comes down to the way we view ourselves or our self-worth. Self-worth is concept so many of us struggle with, not just teenagers.

It’s addressed to kids. A while back, I checked out a library book for the kids I nanny for. It was about self-worth being an issue among the jungle animals. In the story, every animal admired and wished to have the body part of another jungle animal. The lion wished to have the beautiful bright colors of the macaw. Yet, the macaw wished to have the strong legs of the elephant. In the end, the animals all realized that they were admired by another animal. And that made them feel content to be themselves.

Self-worth is a topic mom’s struggle with. The other day, I was reading an article about a mom’s low self-esteem issues. She described herself as “just a mom and just a homemaker.”

The Christian’s Superpower

superman

I think we all have an infatuation with Superman’s powers. I, for one, would have greatly appreciated having super human strength today at the dog groomers. My dog Buddy, weighing in at a beasty 85 pounds, has the incessant need to pull toward every four legged creature in sight. Simply put, there was a lot of embarrassing tug of war going on between “master” and dog.

And to have Superman’s ability to fly?! No more traffic jams, rush hour commutes, or tardiness at work. New Yorkers wouldn’t know what to do with all their extra time. Having x-ray vision, heat vision, and super hearing would come in quite handy as well.

Now just think, we all know Someone who literally has all these powers magnified to the greatest degree. He’s the Creator of the universe. The Alpha and Omega. The Son of God. The mighty King. And by personally knowing Him, God has blessed us with the ability to utilize our own superpower…….the power of prayer.

Do You Desire God Like Cody Desires Justin Beiber?

This first video is a 4 minute 42 second declaration of love from Cody to Justin.

I first heard about Cody’s adoration for Justin Bieber on the radio. As I struggled to endure the last few minutes on my elliptical, I listened as Cody struggled to contain her emotions for Justin. This 3-year-old’s crush put my past teenage crushes to shame. Never had I cried so openly or blatantly over a boy that made my heart skip a beat faster. Cody’s emotional response to her crush truly pulled on my heart strings. This little girl, who I’m sure watches Dora, wears ponytails, plays hopscotch, and eats peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, put my 28-year-old passions to shame.

Making the World a Better Place – A Call to “Pay it Forward”

Have you ever sat at an intersection and watched the cars zoom past long enough to make the headlights start to blur? Now has your mind ever drifted to the people in those blurred cars? Have you ever asked yourself who’s behind the wheel? Are they on their way to a funeral? Are they hurting over a breakup? Do they have enough money to pay their gas bill? Are they saved?

John Donne philosophizes that “No man is an island entire of itself.” And Romans 14:7 states, “For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.” We are all connected. Our lives overflow onto each other.

Maybe it’s just me, but I often wonder what people’s life stories are. I wonder what makes them get up every morning and what motivates them to get through the next 24 hours. When I meet new people, I tend to play the game of 20 questions with them.
