Are you looking for something new for your Sunday School Class? Tired of the same lessons? Have you ever considered using a Hands-On object lesson? It has been said that when you have the ability to see and touch and experience something we are more apt to learn it. So whatever the age group, consider doing something hands on this Sunday!

My favorite illustration uses clay. I like to help the class in making the clay and then give the explaination after they have finished. There are several applications.

1) Job’s explaination of being formed like clay (Job 10)
2)Explain the healing of the blind man (John 9)
3) Explain God as the potter, and we the clay (Romans 9)

Things You’ll Need:

  • Measuring cup
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Mixing spoon
  • Large bowl
  • Clean cutting board
  • Food coloring

Step 1 – Measure out the salt using the measuring cup, and pour into a large bowl.

Step 2 – Measure out 1 cup of warm water, and add to the salt in the bowl. Mix well using the mixing spoon.

Step 3 – Measure out the flour. Begin adding the flour into the bowl. Add small amounts at a time and mix it well.

Step 4 -Dump the now-thick mixture onto the clean cutting board. Knead the clay well, making sure all ingredients are well-mixed. If the mixture is sticky, add some extra flour. If it feels too concentrated, you can thin it with some more water.

Step 5 – Divide dough into sections for coloring. Add food coloring to achieve desired coloring, knead the coloring well to blend it into the clay. Repeat for all desired colors.

Step 6 – Use your new modeling clay to create anything you can imagine. This clay will air-dry if left out overnight.
